What Are Meta Titles and Descriptions?

Meta Titles and Meta Descriptions are the title and description text that appear alongside your website link in search engine results. They play a crucial role in SEO and user engagement — relevant meta tags increase the likelihood of ranking higher and make users more likely to click through to your website.

How to Add or Edit Meta Tags

Steps to Edit Meta Titles and Descriptions

  1. 1<strong>Select the page</strong> — choose the page you want to optimise
  2. 2<strong>Access Page Settings</strong> — click on 'Page Settings' at the top of the page
  3. 3<strong>Open SEO Settings</strong> — click on the second 'SEO' icon at the top of the side panel
  4. 4<strong>Enter Meta Title</strong> — aim to keep your Meta Title under 55 characters (e.g. 'Best Organic Coffee Beans — Shop Now')
  5. 5<strong>Enter Meta Description</strong> — keep your Meta Description under 155 characters (e.g. 'Discover our selection of the best organic coffee beans. Shop now for free shipping on orders over $50.')
  6. 6<strong>Save changes</strong> — click 'Save' to apply
Business plan users can manage meta tags across all pages at once using the Bulk Meta Upload tool in the SEO Manager.

Tips for Effective Meta Tags

Relevancy

Ensure your Meta Title and Description match the content of the page and the search query your visitors are likely to use.

Keywords

Include your primary keywords naturally, but avoid keyword stuffing. Search engines penalise pages that over-use keywords.

Character Limits

Meta Titles should be 50–60 characters. Meta Descriptions should be 150–160 characters. Text beyond these limits may be truncated in search results.

Clarity and Compelling Copy

Write clear, concise text that encourages clicks. Think of your Meta Description as a mini advertisement for the page.

Uniqueness

Avoid duplicate Meta Titles and Descriptions across different pages. Every page should have its own unique tags to avoid confusing search engines.
