301 Redirects

What is a 301 Redirect?

A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect from one URL to another. 301 redirects send site visitors and search engines to a different URL than the one they originally typed into their browser or selected from a search engine results page.

Why do you need them?

You'll need to add 301 redirects if you:

  1. You are migrating from an existing site to Limecube where the page structure is different to the one used on Limecube.
  2. Have deleted or permanently made a page inactive on your site.

While Limecube use best practice for URLs, not all other platforms do, and setting up your redirects will help ensure:

  1. Any of your listings in Google automatically are redirected to the new pages on your Limecube site
  2. The rankings you've built up for each page with your old website are transferred across
  3. Any pages your previous website visitors have saved or bookmarked are correctly redirected.

You'll also need the 301 redirect tool when you remove a page from your site. If the removed page has a similar equivalent it is best to redirect to that page. If it does not, point it to the home page.

How to setup your redirects

Firstly and most importantly, redirects should be done to the closest equivalent of the page being redirected from. If you do not do this, you may lose rankings.

  1. Once you are logged into your account, along the top menu go to: 'SEO Manager' > 301 Redirect Tool.
  2. You'll have 2 ways to add your redirects:

1) Importing via a CSV file (Similar to an Excel file)

Look for the pink arrow on the left as shown in the screenshot below

Importing via a CSV file (Similar to an Excel file)

Click the 'Example CSV file' to download the correct format for your import.

Example CSV file

Your example CSV file will contains these values:

Example CSV file

Origin URL

  1. The origin URL is your original URL from the old site.
  2. This column will not include your domain name, only the page name that comes after your domain name

Destination URL

  1. This is the full URL and page name on Limecube (your new website)
  2. Please make sure this is the same or similar type of page as the origin URL.

Importing

Once you have finished filling out the CSV file:

  1. Click the folder icon and select your CSV file
  2. Click the 'Import' button
  3. The result you should see is all the URLs added to this page.

You can do as many imports as you like, if there are any duplicates the tool will not import that record.

VERY IMPORTANT: There are 2 things you should check after adding redirects:

  1. That your site is still functioning. While it is rare, there is still a risk if your old page URLs have strange characters in them that it could break the site. If this does occur, look for URLs that have unusual characters in them and delete these and check your site again till you locate the URL that has caused the problem.
  2. Check each URL to make sure it is redirecting to the place you want. While this is not as critical as the 1st point, you also don't want to lose your valuable Google rankings.

2) Adding one-by-one

You can add redirects individually simply by clicking the 'Add' button at the top of the page.

Adding one-by-one

Origin URL

  1. The origin URL is your original URL from the old site.
  2. This column will not include your domain name, only the page name that comes after your domain name

Destination URL

  1. This is the full URL and page name on Limecube (your new website)
  2. The will show a list of pages already created in the site making it easier to point to.
    1. Please note there is also the 'Custom URL' option at the bottom of the list if you want to manually place a URL in, however we do recommend using the page selector.
  3. Please make sure this is the same or similar type of page as the origin URL.
