A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect from one URL to another. 301 redirects send site visitors and search engines to a different URL than the one they originally typed into their browser or selected from a search engine results page.

You'll also need the 301 redirect tool when you remove a page from your site. If the removed page has a similar equivalent it is best to redirect to that page. If it does not, point it to the home page.
Firstly and most importantly, redirects should be done to the closest equivalent of the page being redirected from. If you do not do this, you may lose rankings.
